Overview
In 1894 the destruction of the historic Monastery of Mega Agros took place, which according to tradition was built by monks who came from Kyziko in Asia Minor during the period of iconoclasm. The present church of Panagia Eleousa of Agros was built in its place. Based on the descriptions of the monastery, a chapel - museum was rebuilt, in which the iconostasis, the 12th century Despotic Icons, old books and other objects that survived from the demolished monastery were placed. In the courtyard of the church the Department of Antiquities found not only architectural remains, but also a few samples of the frescoes of the monastery, because they were entirely painted, as well as many hooked tiles, used for the roofing of the wooden churches of Troodos.
